What Manual Therapy Can Do For You

Manual Therapy

You need Manual Therapy so your joints, muscles, and disks can move normally and stop causing you to have pain. That’s the simple answer!

“Dr. Amy, I always thought that what you do is what Physical Therapy should be. But I have never had this form of treatment before”. I hear this statement at least once per week in my clinic.

Some patients call it massage (I call it soft tissue mobilization). Some people call it chiropractic (I call it joint mobilization). Some people call my exercises weird (I say that they are super specific to each and every patient).

Overall, you can call it manual therapy. Manual Therapy is the art of knowing what tissue needs to be moved in which direction combined with the science behind knowing how the body moves and heals. Manual therapy is not only knowing WHAT tissue needs to be moved but the HOW to best treat each tissue. Manual therapy, or hands on treatment, is the backbone of Physical Therapy for EveryBODY because of the research supporting the long term effects on getting rid of your pain.

Why is Manual Therapy so much more effective than traditional Physical Therapy?

  1. 1
Soft tissue mobilization has been shown to decrease inflammation. Inflammation causes swelling in the body when the tissues are not able to get rid of the waste products. These waste products build up and lead to inflammation. Too much inflammation leads to swelling and stops the healing process. Soft tissue mobilization also helps to release oxytocin which is the happy-happy-joy-joy chemical naturally found in your body. And, who doesn’t want more happiness and joy flowing through their body?
  2. 2
Joint mobilization and manipulation has been shown to do all kinds of good thing in your body. Once those joints are moving right, the muscles surrounding them can move correctly. Then you get less muscle tightness with improved muscle activation. But wait, there’s more – getting the joint moving correctly actually helps to increase your pain threshold. This is like decreasing the amount of water in your cup. You can actually tolerate more pressure before the joint becomes painful. Any way you slice it, getting those joints moving right is good, good stuff.
  3. 3
Teaching self-mobilization exercises for you to continue your treatment at home. This allows you to continue making progress in between sessions. It empowers you to take control of your pain without having to take pain medication. Wouldn’t you like to learn what you can do to manage your own symptoms?

Struggling with pain and dysfunction can impact every part of our lives — it drains our energy, distracts us from our goals, and keeps us from the people and activities we love. As an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, Dr. Amy Konvalin understands how frustrating those limitations can be — and she knows how to help get you back to the life you want to live! Beginning with a focused evaluation, Dr. Amy works to determine the root causes of your pain, as well as understanding how it affects the way you move through your world. Dysfunctional patterns of movement often grow worse with time and cause further damage if left untreated — so it’s important to address these issues as soon as possible. Dr. Amy knows there is no one-size-fits-all plan for success, and she partners with patients to identify their unique treatment goals and personal values. Using these goals as a guide, Amy uses her doctorate training in manual (hands-on) therapy and exercise prescription to treat patients with a wide variety of medical challenges and histories throughout the Maple Valley, Black Diamond and Covington areas. Dr. Amy is also a wife to a Boeing superstar/former C-130 navigator. While they lived in Germany, Dr. Amy was able to volunteer with the US Army to treat military personnel and civilians on base. She has two beautiful teenage ballerinas who keep her on her toes and educate her on all things ballet! Bailey, the princess pup, is her running partner and her napping partner. In the spare moments in between, Amy enjoys reading, yoga, wine with friends, Pilates, and walking on the beach.
